As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to claim lives around the globe, implementation of appropriate and timely pandemic control measures is critical. Recent calls for allowing “herd immunity” to develop have been met with a response from a group of international researchers in a cogent statement they call the John Snow Memorandum, in honor of the pioneering epidemiologist from the 19th century. The statement authors argue compellingly that the herd immunity approach could lead to many more deaths and illness due to this disease, with no guarantee that herd immunity could even be acquired through viral spread.

As members of the Naturopathic Alliance, we firmly believe that evidence-based pandemic control measures as articulated in the John Snow Memorandum are the best way forward through this pandemic that continues to take human lives and cause significant suffering for our society as a whole. Effective public health does not end with these measures (social determinants of health as well as improved nutrition and exercise, for example, are essential to address multiple causes of mortality and morbidity in our populations), but the Naturopathic Alliance resoundingly endorses containment of the novel coronavirus and reducing its spread through infection control through mask-wearing, physical distancing, and other measures outlined in the John Snow Memorandum.
